Track Plans Gallery

On this page you can view many of the layout designs I have created for other modelers in recent years.  You can use the filter buttons and site search to locate plans by scale, prototype, state, size, and other characteristics.

I use a simple 2D CAD program called MacDraft to do my layout planning.  It is not specialized for model railroading, but I've been using it a long time and it meets my needs.

Here are a couple of resources that you can freely download and distribute for non-commercial purposes:

Bob's Track Planning Questionnaire is the document I use to gather basic information for designing a plan.  It might help you organize your own "Givens n' Druthers."  It's a fillable Microsoft Word doc.

Bob's Curve and Grade Calculator is an Excel spreadsheet with multiple tabs.  It can calculate the length of tracks at various curve radii and grades, along with train lengths and other functions for N, HO, S, and O scales.  Have fun.

As he is building, Derek simplified the original design for his version of Cobourg, Ontario; so he asked me to revise the plan to reflect the changes.  You can follow Derek's progress on his Facebook page.

Timothy had already built his benchwork and staging level, but asked me to help him with the visible deck.  It was necessary to loop the mainline back upon itself to get any kind of mainline length—something I usually avoid—but I was able to add some interest by hiding...

The Rutland is long gone but not forgotten, a favorite among New England modelers. I was pleased to be able to get the Bellows Falls yard very close to the shape and layout of the prototype, including the bizarre set of diamonds over which the B&M crosses the throat....

Mark is building a massive Lehigh Valley railroad and asked for help expanding it to a dual level extension into his crew lounge.  Bottom layer represents the Easton & Northern out of Easton, PA, and the upper layer represents the Montrose Branch.

Focusing on Baltimore and tracks in the streets, this plan adds some flavor of Brunswick in a buildable single deck plan.

A large sectional track plan, designed for preexisting benchwork.  This uses Kato Unitrak in N Scale.  Pravin wanted to model the large container terminals he passes on his way to work, so I based this very loosely on the Elizabeth-Newark area of New Jersey, borrowing...

Jay Eckhardt is a huge fan of Pelle Søeborg's modeling and wanted to replicate Pelle's track plan for his Daneville Sub as closely as possible.  Jay's space was deeper but not as wide as Pelle's, and had the door in a different place, so I came up with thi...

A freelanced (what was your first clue) mining and logging railroad, designed to fit preexisting benchwork.

Russell Sampson is a man after my own heart: he wanted a design very faithful to the prototype, representing a small slice of the real thing (in this case, the Western Maryland from Luke to Thompson, WV), and planned to use a helix for staging—perfect for open-top load...

Tom had no particular prototype in mind for his "retirement railroad," (thus the tongue-in-cheek name) but wanted a double track-main and the ability to see trains "cross over one another" along with logging and coal industries.  I designed a SP-flavored pike with a do...
