Track Plans Gallery

On this page you can view many of the layout designs I have created for other modelers in recent years.  You can use the filter buttons and site search to locate plans by scale, prototype, state, size, and other characteristics.

I use a simple 2D CAD program called MacDraft to do my layout planning.  It is not specialized for model railroading, but I've been using it a long time and it meets my needs.

Here are a couple of resources that you can freely download and distribute for non-commercial purposes:

Bob's Track Planning Questionnaire is the document I use to gather basic information for designing a plan.  It might help you organize your own "Givens n' Druthers."  It's a fillable Microsoft Word doc.

Bob's Curve and Grade Calculator is an Excel spreadsheet with multiple tabs.  It can calculate the length of tracks at various curve radii and grades, along with train lengths and other functions for N, HO, S, and O scales.  Have fun.

Bob Ullrich took a shine to the B&O plan I developed for Larry Vandusen.  The space was different enough that I proposed redesigning it overall, but a number of the components remained the same.  The large open space in the center was left for a crew lounge; putting th...

Thomas has a unique and rather challenging attic space for his railroad.  We managed to make use of three of the dormers while retaining the out-in-the-country and largely tangent prototype from Southern Illinois.  Interestingly the staging wound up on the middle level...

Somehow the Norfolk Southern's ascent of the Blue Ridge has not achieved the fame of other feats of railroad engineering, but it should not be so. On its way from Linwood, NC to Asheville the track ascends the Old Fort Loops, a series of hairpin turns that rivals the S...

A special building will be built to house this monster, a grand tour of some of the iconic locations of North American railroading.  It was a trick to represent Horseshoe Curve, Cascade Tunnel, Keddie Wye, Tehachapi Loop, and the spiral tunnels of Kicking Horse Pass on...

Alastair Brown was inspired by the UP Caliente Subdivision plan published in Model Railroad Hobbyist, and wanted a version to fit his new train room.  Alastair lives in Scotland -- a bit of a piece from the UP home turf.

A central staircase is a layout planner's best friend -- eliminating the need for a gate or duckunder even for a double-track nolix design like this one.  George's plan centers on York, PA in the 80s, with Conrail, NS, and CSX converging.

Rich had most of the benchwork built before coming to me for a design.  He had very specific ideas about where towns and – most important – full-scale replicas of iconic bridges along the Clinchfield's main line from Erwin, TN to Elkhorn City, KY.  He was a little stuc...

We fit a pretty good representation of the famous Lehigh Valley mainline from Lehighton to Wilkes-Barre along with a couple of branch lines into Devin's basement thanks to the space-saving properties of N scale.  It was a trick to miss the Lally columns.

This plan fits a nice representation of the northern half of CSX's KD Subdivision into a two car garage.  Brian wanted a steel mill, an engine terminal, a helper district, a long bridge over a river, a power plant with a rotary dumper that would actually dump coal from...

Robin's huge railroad fills two rooms and surrounds a uniquely-shaped utility area with staging tracks.  It includes a representation of the naval shipyard on Mare Island north of Oakland, CA.
